CONCLUSION

The work of an elder and deacons is an honorable one. It is one for which God Himself equips the individual. It is a work in which the Holy Spirit is immediately involved. This is a serious work involving the care of the flock of God and the proper administration of needful things. These are arresting considerations, but ought not discourage anyone from setting "his heart on being an overseer" (1 Tim. 3:1), or seeking to be a deacon. These are noble works, and must therefore be sought by spiritually noble people.

I encourage every elder and deacon to excel in the office, bringing honor to God and strength to His people. As the hymn writer said, "prepare a strict account to give." It will go well with you in the day of judgement if you have brought advantages to the brothers and sisters of Jesus.

If you are an elder or a deacon, and feel as though you come short of what is expected from you, do not despair. Assuming that you are desirous of pleasing the Lord in your work, and being of assistance to His people, seek His help in the matter. You already know what He has determined to be the work of the elder and the deacon. All that remains is for you to desire the same thing. Here is the promise of God. "Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart" (Psa 37:4). Now, believe that, and proceed in your ministry accordingly.
