THE MEEKNESS OF CHRIST

Devotion #12 of 13

"I am meek and lowly in heart" -- Jesus

THE EFFECT OF CHRIST'S MEEKNESS Comers learn from Jesus

Those who come to Jesus will be richly rewarded! They will be tutored by the Lord Jesus Himself, and will enjoy the unspeakable benefits of spiritual illumination. Those who come to Christ and learn from Him, will soon find His qualities within them. You can neither come to Jesus nor duly consider Him without becoming like Him. The experiential view of this is called "the fruit (not fruits) of the Spirit." Working through our consideration of the Son, the Spirit changes us from one stage of glory to another, thereby conforming us to Christ's image. As it is written, "But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord" (2 Cor 3:18).

2 Corinthians 3

The third chapter of second Corinthians provides a contrast between grace and law, faith and works, Sinai and Zion. We are not "changed" by slavish obedience, but by transforming power. The strength of false religion is concealment; the strength of our salvation is revelation! We behold Christ "with open (or unveiled) face." Paul's point is this: at Sinai, the glory of God had to be subdued in order that the people might bear it. However, this is not the case in Christ. Now, the glory has been unveiled, in order that it might transform us. This unveiling has occurred because of the "meekness and gentleness of Christ." In humbling Himself to become like us, He not only made Himself accessible to us, He removed the jeopardy formerly associated with viewing Deity. Paul has accentuated the words of Christ Himself. "Come and learn from Me, for I am meek and lowly in heart." We come to God "through Christ" because there is no other way to come without being destroyed.
