THINKING AND SPIRITUAL LIFE

"For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing EVERY THOUGHT into captivity to the obedience of Christ." (2 Corinthians 10:4-5)

FINALLY

In conclusion, what can be said about our thought lives? Where should we focus our minds, and how should we conduct ourselves in the arena of contemplation? There is a word from God on this subject. "Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things" (Phil 4:8). Things that are "true" are things that are eternal--ultimate reality. They have been revealed in the Word of God, and find their fulfillment in Christ. They are immediately related to God and His "great salvation," sustaining the soul and making the heart glad. THINK upon them! Things that are "honest" are things honorable, grave, and venerable. They are unmixed with guile, hypocrisy, and deception. They have the character of Jesus, are pure, and are reserved for those who have faith. Such things are associated with an inheritance that is reserved in heaven for you. THINK upon them! Things that are "just" are equitable, holy, and appropriate for the people of God. They are right in God's eyes, and to be preferred above silver and gold. These are things you will never have to relinquish, because they transfer into eternity. THINK upon them! Things that are "pure" are clean and perfect, unmixed with defilement. They do not contaminate the heart, mind, or soul. They have a purifying effect when taken into the mind, and rejoice the heart of the one finding satisfaction in them. THINK upon them! Things that are "lovely" are acceptable and pleasing to the heart and mind. They do not chaff against your spirit, cause sorrow, or produce bitterness. These are things that make life tolerable in this world because they come from Him Who is "altogether lovely." THINK upon them! Things that are of "good report" are commendable--like honey out of the rock. They are things honored in heaven, and reputable among the godly. You will never have to repent for believing and embracing them. They prepare you for eternity. THINK upon them! "Virtue" speaks of excellence and comeliness, joined with strength and productivity. It is a divine quality, and has joined with "glory" to bring us "all things pertaining to life and godliness" (2 Pet 1:1-3). Those who partake of this will not be rebuked by God. THINK upon virtuous things. "Praise" speaks of divine commendation; things "approved of God." These are things our Father has approved for us through Christ Jesus. They are summarized in "righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit" (Rom 14:17). Those who walk by faith and in the Spirit will "receive praise from God" in the day of the Lord (1 Cor 4:5). THINK upon things related to the praise of God! You will be blessed by so doing! PRAYER POINT: Father, In Jesus name, and because, by Your grace I am in Him, strengthen me to think upon things of which I am not ashamed in Your Presence.
