WHY SIN IS UNREASONABLE

"What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?" (Romans 6:1-2)

Devotion 14 of 23

THE AFFECT OF SIN UPON DEITY

Sin DOES have an effect upon God! There is a strain of false theology that portrays God as insensitive toward sin and transgression. Those that imagine this delusion suppose God is unaffected by their sin, and is willing to overlook it because they are "just human." Such thoughts have been spawned in the bottomless pit, and are designed to lead men to perdition. God is omnipotent, but not impervious to feeling. He is omniscient, but not unaffected by what He sees.

Causes Grief to God

You should know that anything capable of causing grief to God is something of unspeakable enormity. Yet, that is precisely what sin does to God: it causes Him grief. This condition is what occasioned the destruction of the ancient world by water. Man's sin became so great that the Lord regretted He had ever made man. "And it repented the LORD that He had made man on the earth, and it grieved Him at His heart" (Gen 6:6). It is true that the Lord knew all along what was in man, what he was going to do, and the effect it would have. Yet, it still grieved Him at His heart! That is a commentary on the nature of sin!

Notice, God was grieved "at His heart." This was not a surface matter, or a mere reaction. The very nature of God was disturbed by the dominance of sin among His creatures. Those who can tolerate sin have no understanding of this Divine reaction. In their toleration, they also betray their personal alienation from God. We live in a time when men can look at sin without it apparently affecting it. God cannot do so! Let no soul doubt it; that makes sin totally unreasonable.

PRAYER POINT: Father, in Jesus' name, grant me to see sin as You do.
