COMPREHENDING THE MAGNITUDE

"That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; and to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God." (Ephesians 3:17-19)

IS IT REALLY POSSIBLE?

The aim of Paul's prayer for the saints is marvelous! Strengthened with might by God's Spirit in the inner man! Christ dwelling in our hearts by faith! Rooted and grounded in love! Comprehending with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height of what we have in Christ!

We have heard lofty words. Are they too lofty? Are they beyond your reach? Is it really possible for you to comprehend the extent of God's marvelous salvation to any measurable degree? Is it possible to even have a profound and effective knowledge of God Himself? Indeed it is! That is why Paul prayed as he did!

There is a note of hope in this final word. Here is something faith can grasp. "Now to Him who is able to do exceeding abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen" (v. 20)

The question is not if you CAN comprehend "with all saints," but whether or not you will believe God! He can do even more than you can imagine, using the power that is dedicated to working in believers.

Having said all of this, the emphasis of the words "breadth, length, height, and depth," is the knowableness of Divine love. Staggering, yes; unknowable, no! Anything that has dimensions can be, to a significant degree, comprehended-- and that is the point of the text. The dimensions are exceeding large, but not beyond our capacity in Christ! If we are to profit from this love, we must be able to think upon it, ponder it, and have it in our meditations. This can never be done if it is beyond our reach or unknowable!

May you, in accord with Paul's prayer, be convinced of the perceivability of God's love in Christ. Even though it goes beyond the perimeter of human capability and knowledge, it is not beyond the power of faith! May you realize an expansion in your comprehension of God's everlasting love and great salvation.

PRAYER POINT: Father, I know that in Your Son I am capable of understanding more of Yourself and Your great salvation that I presently understand. In Jesus' name, grant me grace to excel in this type of comprehension.
