A GOD THAT HIDES HIMSELF

"Truly, Thou art a God Who hidest Thyself, O God of Israel, the Savior" -- Isaiah 45:15

ABRAHAM OFFERING ISAAC

As the father of the faithful (Rom 4:16), we should expect to find in Abraham a noble example of endurance during affliction. Indeed, this is the case! After waiting for a promised son for many years, God appeared to Abraham, commanding him to offer the "child of promise" upon an altar (Gen 22:2ff). God fully intended to provide a substitute offering, but did not divulge His plan to Abraham. In this matter, the Lord "hid" Himself.

Abraham's faith was sufficient to enable him to navigate through this difficult circumstance. When queried by Isaac about the absence of a lamb, he replied, "My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering" (Gen 22:8). However, he did not know how or when the Lord would this. His faith took hold of God Himself, even though he received no commitment from the Lord. God had hidden Himself in this matter. Centuries later, the Holy Spirit informed us that Abraham reasoned God was going to raise Isaac from the dead. "By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son. Of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called: accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure" (Heb 11:17-19).

Mark this well, God hid from Abraham what He was going to do. Yet, Abraham reasoned after a godly manner, even though he was technically wrong. Thus did he justify and glorify his God, although his reasoning was not totally accurate. There is a great lesson to be learned here--about the nature of God and the nature of faith. It is not necessary for faith to have all of the answers. Nor, indeed, is it necessary for God to give all the answers. Faith, and only faith, can move ahead, even when God hides Himself!

PRAYER POINT: Father, in the name of Jesus, help me to comprehend more fully that You are working all things together for my good, even when it is not apparent.
