A GOD THAT HIDES HIMSELF

"Truly, Thou art a God Who hidest Thyself, O God of Israel, the Savior" -- Isaiah 45:15

Devotion 26 of 26

CONCLUSION

There are times in the life of a believer when eternal issues are more clear. During those times, Scripture is more readily understood, and holiness makes more sense. It is not enough to merely experience those times, you must do something about them. Spiritual growth is to take place during those occasions. Progress toward the goal is to be realized. Our religion cannot be anchored to the emotional part of us. A spiritual uplift is vital, but if we do not make progress during that time, it has really yielded no benefit.

Multitudes do not see this. We live in a time when spiritual exhilaration is viewed as an end of itself. It is not. Elation is a catalyst, not a treasure, for the soul. It provides resources to progress in our relation to and labor with the living God. As simplistic as that may seem, it is scarcely known in many religious circles.

There are also times when the things of God are not as clear as we prefer. It then appears that we are more distant from the Lord, and our understanding is not as fruitful as when we stand in the light of His countenance. We become spiritually dull, as if a mist had covered the "Sun of righteousness." We are generally not productive ministers during these times. These are times when God hides Himself. If you hope to survive those seasons, you must walk in the light while you have it. Those occasions--when helplessness grips your heart--are times of testing. They are times when God hides Himself for beneficial purposes. That is the way He is. He is a God that hides Himself.

While we are in the world, these things are necessary. Duly heeded, they will show us the poverty of the flesh, worldly wisdom, and natural ability. But it shall not always be this way. There is coming a day when we shall see Him "face to face" (1 Cor 13:12). Then we shall "see Him as He is" (1 John 3:2). Never again will He be hidden! Until that time, He remains a God that "hides" Himself.

However, all that comprehend these things by faith, and respond properly to them, will, nevertheless, be advantaged--even when the Lord "hides" Himself. His obscurity will only be temporary, and will, to those dominated by faith and hope, contribute to their maturity. When He hides, look for Him! It will greatly please Him, and you will not be disappointed.

PRAYER POINT: Father, I thank You through Jesus Christ that You are a very present Help in the time of trouble -- whether I sense it or not. I praise Your name that faith can take hold of You even when the skies of the soul are dark and foreboding.
