CHRIST'S RELATIONSHIP TO DAVID

In the matter of His Sovereignty, Jesus is related to David the king. God promised David a ruler would be seated upon His throne forever. " . . . thy throne shall be established for ever" (2 Sam 7:16). "But I will settle him in mine house and in my kingdom for ever: and his throne" (1 Chron 17:14). On the surface, these texts appear to refer exclusively to Solomon. And, indeed, his exaltation was included in these promises.

However, in His elaboration of those Divine commitments, the Holy Spirit applied them to the exaltation and reign of the Lord Jesus Christ.  The prophesies of David's seed sitting upon his throne forever were applied to Jesus Christ by the angel Gabriel (Luke 1:31-33). Zechariah alluded to the promises in His statement about the Messiah building the temple of the Lord (Zech 6:12-13). Peter unequivocally refers the ultimate fulfillment of these prophecies of Jesus, and specifically to His resurrection (Acts 2:20-31).

I know of no prophecies to David that specifically mentioned that the Messiah would come from him. The prophecies all sounded as though Solomon was their focus. But that was only in a preliminary sense. The Spirit consistently applies those prophecies to the Lord Jesus Himself.

Jesus is that Ruler. It is important to note that Christ's identity with David pertains to His redemptive role. "An account of the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah, the Son of David, the son of Abraham" (Matt 1:1). "As Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed him, crying loudly, 'Have mercy on us, Son of David!'" (Matt 9:27). "The crowds that went ahead of Him and that followed were shouting, "Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven!"" (Matt 21:9).  Paul wrote, "Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, a descendant of David--that is my gospel" (2 Tim 2:8). When the glorified Christ appeared to john on the Isle of Patmos, He said, "It is I, Jesus, who sent my angel to you with this testimony for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star" (Rev 22:16).

Many teach that Christ's association with David has not yet come; that this is to occur in a coming Messianic reign upon the earth. However, the Holy Spirit has related this with Christ's incarnation, resurrection, salvation, and the Gospel. As we will see, there is a remarkable consistency in this declaration.

Contrary views are developed by fitting Scriptures together that were not so combined by the Apostles. Such attempts are fraught with danger, for they rely upon the wisdom of men. It is true that such men affirm God has opened these things to them. Notwithstanding that condition, I have chosen to reject such teachings.

Jesus now occupies the throne of David. He is doing so in express fulfillment of God's promise, and this reign is specifically related to the salvation of men.

PRAYER POINT: Father, in the name of Jesus, I thank You for not only declaring David would not lack for a Man to sit upon His throne, but for also confirming that Man is Christ Jesus, the Savior of the world.
